Songbird 1.0 the Mozilla powered open source customizable music player has been released to the public today. This is a music player with extras that should give Itunes a run for its money.
Songbird, just like other open source creations, can be and will be tweaked and improved at a rapid rated with add-on apps and extensions. Currently the product appears to have several neat features that make it quite fun to play with. One such feature is the ability of the music player to do a mashup using 'mashtape' which allows you to add content relevant to the music you are playing, such as photos, news, videos, etc all drawn in from sources such as flickr, Google news, Youtube, etc. Very cool idea.
So while the mainstream consumers all ride around on their bandwagon with their Ipod in their ears and their Iphone in their pocket, those of us who enjoy the raw creativity and ingenuity of the small developer can give this new software a chance and watch it develop into something much cooler and more fun.
