As a business owner in Lethbridge, having a basic understanding of SEO search engine optimization is something which can help help you develope an effective and affordable marketing plan. 

Lethbridge is an interesting community in the fact that our population of individuals who are under 25 and over 65 are both quite large.  This is due to large numbers of students and senior citizens who call Lethbridge home.  Lethbridge is also a fairly affluent city.  Virtually all of our residents are online or have access to the internet, yet the majority of our local businesses have no online presence at all.

I do a substantial amount of shopping online.  I also do a substantial amount of my own Lethbridge business online.  Most of my competitors are not even there to compete with me.  I find this amazing.

Even searching for 'Lethbridge SEO' in google you discover that 5 of the top 10 search results come back to me or articles that I have written.  How can it be that the very companies who claim to be able to put your business on the first page of Google, or at the top of search engines, cannot even out rank me for search terms that directly pertain to their business?

Yesterday I received an email from a fellow AR member who was asking me for a good source for inbound links.   I have my website included in many directories online, many of which I manually submitted it to myself, but also many more that I paid to have my site submitted to.  Directories are like an online version of the yellow pages.  They are simply central websites that contain links to many other wesites by category.  At one time they were extremely significant in achieving top search engine placement.  While they are not as significant a factor anymore, they are still important and a cheap and simple way to increase your websites presence on the internet and search engine ranking.

Directory submission is definitely something that you can do yourself, and there are lots of free directories that you can submit your website to.  The only drawback to submitting to lots of these free directories is that it takes quite a bit of time to search them all out, then to fill in all the same information over and over and clicking submit.  If you get busy doing submissions, you can maybe submit to 10 in an hour, so depending upon what your time is worth you may wish to do that.

A better way is to pay a professional submission service to submit you to the free directories.  They obviously utilize some automated script to fill in the forms, as they charge as little as 14 cents per submission!   For that low price, I can't imagine that anyone would want to do it any other way.

I would recommend anyone with a website spends $30 or $40 on directory submission.  Having your site listed in all those free directories create lots of one way links to your site, helps the search engines spider it much much more often, and keeps you current in the search engine placements.
